Questions and Answers

Reman or Rebuild?

Q. Please give simple novice-type explanations for my questions. What happens when an engine is rebuilt? Do rebuilt engines come with a warranty?

A. That's easy enough to do. First of all there are rebuilt and remanufactured engines. There are a few differences between the two. A rebuilt engine is where you take an engine and reuse the major and use over sized parts to replace worn out components. Such as over sized pistons to compensate for worn cylinders and over sized bearings to compensate for worn crankshafts and connecting rods.

A remanufactured engine is stripped down to the bare block, boiled out and cleaned. Usually they are sand blasted to prepare the block for new paint. Then the cylinders are machined so they are all the same size and the top of the block is milled so it is perfectly flat. The crankshaft journals are ground and polished so they are perfectly round with no pits or grooves. New pistons, rings and connecting rods are installed to match all the machining that has been done and new bearings are used to match the newly finished journals.

Same thing with the cylinder head(s). They are cleaned, sand blasted and checked for cracks. Then the valve seats are either cut to the proper angles or replaced and the mounting face is machined so it, too, is perfectly flat. Valves, valve springs, and rocker arms are replaced at this time as well. Any and all studs, bolts and miscellaneous hardware is replace.

New crankshaft and camshaft gears are installed as well as a new timing belt or chain. The required gaskets and seals are installed as the engine is reassembled. Basically that's it. Of course it's not as simple as it sounds, there's a lot of precision work involved in remanufacturing an engine.

Rebuilt engines may or may not come with a warranty, and they could range from 90 days to one year. Remanufactured engines usually come with a two or three year warranty covering parts and labor. If you're in the market for a new engine, shop around and look for a good price and a good warranty. A good place to start is JASPER Remanufactured Products. They are one of the biggest engine remanufacturers in the country. Their web site is loaded with information that I think will be of interest to you as well.
